View Full Version : Liability Insurance to protect if someone sues

If someone sues me what type of insurance do I need?
I don't intend on this happening but I don't intend on dying in the next 20 years but I bought life insurance. I'm unsure if I should/could add or increase liability insurance on my home owners or if I need to purchase a seperate policy.
Is this a common thing for someone to buy? I have not ever heard of anyone advertising this kind of insurance so let me know your thoughts.

Notinthebiz,

The kind of insurance you need to consider is an "umbrella policy". There is a catch though. An umbrella policy is an addition to your current homeowners insurance, but to qualify for it you usually have to increase your homeowners base policy to the maximum first. After that, you can add the umbrella policy to the base. There are very cheap once you have your homeowners maximized. Coverage limits for umbrella policies can have general liability limits of up to 3 million (it may be more now, I haven't checked in awhile). The reason for the umbrella is exactly what you describe.

Is this worth it or I should ask, is this a common purchase by the average Joe?
We live very simple and are early in our careers so our NW is virtually $0 but our income potential is above average. I guess what I'm asking is if we don't have assets for someone to take in a lawsuit other than a home with a mortgage is this something I should consider or wait until we actually have cash and property to lose.....can someone take what we don't have?

To me an "umbrella policy" is always something good to have, it may save you big time if it's ever needed. But as Price has said you must ensure you don't have a gap between where the home insurance stops and where the umbrella policy kicks in. If you have a pool, boat, atv, or anything else that can cause harm, it's even more important to have the policy. I don't know any numbers about the average Joe but most home owners I know do have it.
