View Full Version : Is Berkshire Hathaway a good stock to buy?

I got a question. Since Warren Buffett is the greatest investor of all time do you think it would be a good idea to but all your Roth IRA money and regular account money in Berkshire Hathaway stock? I was looking at the track record on the stock and it is unbelieveable! 20% annual return. Does anybody have an opinion on this issue? I would have to buy the B shares of the stock because I would only be investing $31,000.

I own the B shares. Personally, I think it's a good buy-and-hold stock, but keep in mind that Buffett is getting older and at one point when there were rumors he was in his deathbed (he wasn't), the stock dropped 10%. It also dropped during the dot-com boom years and he admitted that he hadn't cashed in on the dot-com boom because he didn't understand it. Of course that was for good reason! I'm just pointing out that BRK, like any other stock, can go down.

One thing I love about it is its tax efficiency. They've got the advantage of a mutual fund because they own so many different companies but they don't pay dividends and don't throw off capital gains- so there's zero effect on your taxes every year. A bonus is being able to attend the annual meeting in Omaha- we're 3 hours from there so we go whenever we can.

But please see my sig line- this is a personal opinion and not professional advice.

Thanks Athena. Where is the best place to buy Berkshire Hathaway stock?

Anywhere, really. If you plan to do nothing but invest in Berkshire-Hathaway, an on-line discount brokerage is fine. (Schwab, e-trade, plenty of others.) If you may eventually want access to a good family of mutual funds, you could open an account at Vanguard or Fidelity (I assume they also let you trade in stocks). I use a full-service brokerage but that's because I like getting advice on my portfolio. In your case, it's not needed so you so shouldn't have to pay for it.
