View Full Version : Help changing witholdings

I want to change my withholdings so I get more per check and don't get such a big refund at the end of the year. In addition I do not want to owe the IRS a ton of money either. I am currently single and claim 0. However I do own a home which 75% of it is used as a rental property so I do get those deductions as well. My average tax refund since I have owned my house is about 6,000.00.

My gross salary for 07 was 52,260.00. Each pay check my gross was 2,181.11.
For the year federal taxes were 8,419.24 and NY State was 2,584.00. In addition to this I also have pre-tax medical and dental which is 40 per pay period and 3% of gross going into a 401k.

If anyone can help me changing my withholding so I can get more each check and not have to pay the IRS at the end of the year that would be great. I have tried using the IRS calculators myself but they are so confusing.

I get paid twice a month on the 15th and the 30th. Also can someone give me a ballpark idea of how much more I would be looking at in each check once I do this? Any advice appreciated

About the best you can do is just fiddle with it. Try claiming just one. If you still get a fat refund, take two the next year!

I claim one, and at the end of the year I owe the Feds about $100, and the state about $40. That's no big deal to pay. Also, I don't itemize -- I take student loan deductions only.

Find a paycheck calculator. Such as
http://www.paycheckcity.com/

and enter current numbers.

Then keep adjusting to point where take home pay is $6000/12=$500 per month higher (if you get paid 2X per month, then $250/check, if you get paid every other week $6000/26=$230).

That will tell you. There is also a way on W-4 to just say "withhold $230 less per check". I use that same place to make sure state withholds "$50 more" because I usually end up owing Ohio a few hundred each year.
