My wife recently recieived a 2% raise from her company. Is it customary to thank him for this?? Or is this bad practice??

A simple verbal thanks is probably sufficient. But I wouldn't go all out -- 2% is hardly "jump for joy" money. It's not even COLA. It falls into the "better than nothing" category.

But I guess it depends on the culture of her workplace. In mine, the raise is the COMPANY saying "thanks", acknowledging the excellence of the employee.

what is COLA?

COLA = cost of living adjustment. Since the CPI for 2007 was over 4%, a 2% raise unfortunately doesn't even keep up with inflation.

Totally right. I heard a yearly bonus should be 10% per annum still with benefits and yes COLA

Dingobiscuit
10% Annually?!?!? Are you still hiring? :)

it's a little bit late to reply but yeah I guess you should thank your wife for every success that she's doing and by now, im sure that she will get another raise..

jron
Well, it is cool to say thanks. Just to acknowledge the appreciation you have for the raise.

2% is not nearly enough to offset inflation, but unfortunately in these economic conditions it's not easy to get higher raise.

I tend to view pay and promotions as communications from your boss to you. A 2% raise sounds like a negative communication to me, unless the company is experiencing unusually hard times and that's all they can afford.

With that in mind, you decide if a "thank you" or a question "where can I improve" is in order.

rachael24
Doc said it right...only 2% isnt too good, I would ask about areas of improvement.

Two percent raise is better then no raise guys and gals. :D

I would thank the boss for it. However I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. Just continue as normal. Maybe if you work hard, get a bigger raise.

I think if your wife thanks the boss for 2% raise, that is a good thing.

Here's how I thanked my new boss.

When I was hired, my new boss specifically asked me if I was happy with my last raise (2+%), and I explained that I was not, and felt I had demonstrated value beyond that, and it was all documented in our performance system. So when I received another 2+%, and he specifically asked me about it, I replied that the company was not interested in keeping me as an employee. This was not well received at the time, and understandably so.

However, I feel that speaking the truth about how I feel has resulted in other perks being extended. I also know that he values me being there, and is not happy that the corporation seems bent on chasing employees to other large companies.

In the short term I've decided to make the best of this situation. However, a long range strategy means I have to go elsewhere, as I have lost much earning power in three years with the company. Since I only have about 10 to go, I have to make the best use of that time.

2%? I would thank him but never celebrate for that. 2% is just a small amount and I believe that your wife deserves more than 2%, am I right? :)

FredJones53
Like many before me have said, 2% isn't keeping up with the cost of inflation, but for the sake of saying "thank you" to the boss its not going to harm.

Too many people forget how easy it is to be polite to people and thank them for things, even when they are well deserved.

wchua24
well, am thanking my boss for being considerate at some times but not about hte salary...lol

grace
YES!!! and of course, show your boss that you deserve it
