View Full Version : Filed Return And Missed A 1099

Hi -

I can't be the first person to do this. Maybe I am...

What if you complete and efile your return, only to discover you've omitted a 1099 (or some other required document) from the return. How do you include (add) this add'l document to the return, AND pay any add'l taxes that may be owed? Is there a specific form for that? Can I efile the correction?
I use TurboTax.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time

Nyjay,

If the amount shown on your 1099 will not change your tax, perhaps nothing will happen.

Otherwise, 1 of 2 things will/must happen.
The IRS will send you a letter telling you you missed that 1099, and that you owe some amount of additional tax, plus interest. This could take a year before you receive the letter.

Or you could file a 1040-X and ammend your return.
Wait about 4 weeks from the time you filed to ammend your return.
The ammended return must be mailed.
Filing the ammended return by April 15,2008 will avoid any interest caused by this ommission.

Filing your return and then a few days after that sending in an ammended return will cause confusion and delay.
