View Full Version : 529 plans in Washington State
Tom Hickey
One 4year old daughter and 1 on the way in March. I am trying to determine the best education savings vehicle. We have a combined income of approx. 175K.
Q:529 seems like a good tool but I have heard that Washington has stipulations regarding enrollment ect...
Do you recomend 529 or an educational IRA?
Any other educations savings vehicles that I may not know about would be helpful.

Remember, you're not limited to using your state's 529 plan. Many states let nonresidents invest in their plans.

The Kiplinger article was very good, but it was written over 16 months ago. Since then the economy has dealt many 529 savings plans a serious blow. Many have lost money since the article was printed. Washington State's 529 prepaid tuition plan know as the GET, Guaranteed Education Tuition, plan offers tuition units guaranteed by the State of Washington. With the University of Washington talking about a 21% tuition hike this year, and the Governor considering giving the universities the authority to set their own tuition rates, the timing for purchasing GET units seems ripe. While I have to wait two year before I can request a refund, this is money intended for college, and I'm not planning on using it for anything else. And since my GET units are usable at any accrediated college in the country, and cover things other than just tuition, I think it was a wise choice.
