View Full Version : Tax Credit for working on cruise ship?
orcprincess
I may have been misinformed, but then so have all my coworkers. I have worked on a cruise ship for the last year, and we were told that there is a daily credit that we are entitled to at tax time for our sea time. We were told to hold onto our discharge papers which states how many days we were at sea, and that would get placed on a separate tax form, and we would get reimbursed for that. I went into H & R Block and they laughed me out of the building. Has anybody ever heard of this?

Ok, so apparently my question didn't show up? I am just inquiring to see if anyone knows about tax credits for sea time if one worked on a cruise ship. We were informed by our employer that as long as we had our discharge papers(which I do) which states our time at sea, there was a daily credit for that. I asked at H&R Block and was laughed out of their office.

Clydewolf is one of the main tax gurus that lurks on this forum, but this might be a good place to start until his reply:

Thank you! That's a start.

Orcprincess,
That is one that I have never heard of. It does not mean it does not exist.
There are many strange things in the tax code.
We are to pay taxes on our world wide income. We can get credit for taxes we pay to most foreign governments. But there is no foreign government in international waters.
I'll give you a link to a forum that has many regulars that know much more than I do.
You may want to post your question here: http://fairmark.com/forum/list.php?4

I thank you for your assistance. I will ask over there. I have been trying to contact my employer concerning this...which is proving impossible at this time.
