View Full Version : Notify Credit Reporting Agency...?

of inaccurate information on my credit report?

Got a no cost one yr. credit monitoring membership as a result of a security breach within the County Office of Education's Human Resource System. They claim to have identified a "small possibility" that personal information (minor stuff like soc sec #, birth date, bank/direct deposit acct info!) may have been obtained by the perpetrators. I get the opportunity to worry about it for the next yr. free of charge.

So after enrolling, I viewed my report from the 3 agencies and spotted a couple of errors. One shows a mortgage account that I refinanced out of 15 yrs ago as still open but with a $0 balance. I swear I disputed this one 7-8 yrs ago and got it changed. The other is with a different agency. Of a little more concern, it shows a balance of around 26k on my mortgage (with the correct bank) but also shows the account as closed (the account is closed with no balance). No negatives just inaccurate info. Credit score is very high, but it is the Experian score, which is the one agency of the 3 that has completely accurate data. I'd have to pay to see my score on the other 2.

How much should I care about this? I guess it's not too much of a big deal to report it to the 2 agencies and get it cleared up. But it doesn't seem to have made any difference as I have excellent credit with no negatives at all.

You're entitled to a free credit report with all three agencies, once a year, so you shouldn't have to pay for anything.

My view is if it's not affecting your credit, forget it. Those $0 accounts the credit checkers know are moot; they have to sift through trash like that all the time so I doubt it affects your credit.
