I became unemployed in June of '07. I received severence in the form or a regular paycheck semi-mo for 6 mos. I filed for and received unemployment for 6 mos from July thru Dec so that I received more totally than I would have normally received had I not been laid off. Do I include total compensation for the unemployment on line 13 or just the tax? Also I took a distribution from my 401k before I knew that I would become unemployed. How is this handled?

Workless629,
You must be looking at form 1040A.
You should have received a form 1099-G from your unemployment office.
Report the amount shown on the 1099-G box 1 on your 1040A line 13.
If you had tax withheld from your unemployment (usually 1099 box 4), add that amount to the amounts withheld for income tax shown on your W-2s box 2, and put the total withheld on lin line 38.
