View Full Version : Anyone else think dividend checks are stupid

No, I don't mean getting money is stupid. I mean the whole point here is for my long-term investment.....why then bother sending me a check for some piddly amount? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for the default action to be giving me extra stock in that amount? A $4.95 check is scarcely worth the effort to go cash/deposit it, and certainly is a hideous waste of tree bark, in my opinion.

Did you look into Dividend Reinvestment Programs? Most brokerages have a DRIP option, to invest dividends in purchases of partial shares of stock.

Only tricky thing is figuring out the cost-basis of the shares purchased through DRIP when you sell the stock later.

Dividends are good if the stocks that yield them are in a tax-exempt account (i.e. Roth IRA) AND are reinvested.

If you are using a taxable account, buy stocks that appreciate but do not pay dividends. You will ultimately pay less taxes and make more money.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that, investments with good dividend yields for ROTH IRAs.

Don't have to worry about the cost basis in that case.

Dividends are KING in Roth. For example, look at VIG. Good Vanguard ETF, appreciates well, and consist of companies that have been increasing dividends for I think atleast 10 years.
