View Full Version : Question about Fund's worth
AndyP
In a individual account outside of my Roth IRA, I purchased Vanguard Int'l Growth VWIGX for 3k. I believe I also paid an extra 50$ because it was not a fidelity fund. At any rate, the fund is no worth approx. $3,400 - so in my head, I see that I am up about $400. However, Fidelity shows me down about $200. Can anybody explain this? Please let me know if i forgot to mention any important details.

If you sold it tomorrow, the $200 loss is what you'd declare on your taxes.
My guess is that at some point you paid taxes on gains of $600. (These amounts would have been on a 1099 you got at the end of each year and included in your taxable income.) What the IRS sees as your "cost basis" is the $3,000 you put into it plus the $600 gains you got (even if you reinvested them they're taxable), so that's $3,600, which is $200 more than what it's worth now.
