View Full Version : Spam- worse than usual- what to do?
Athena53
I just deleted about 15 messages this morning- different poster names, but all containing the same list of links. I did the same thing yesterday.
This is a note to the Kiplinger's staff in charge of maintaining this site. We are all amateur moderators- many of us have demanding day jobs. In my case, if I click on a post to delete it while I'm at work and there are key words such as "porn" in the title, the post is blocked by my company server. Since my employer has the right to monitor what I do on my work computer, I can't delete some posts that contain "forbidden words" in the subject line and I'm very concerned that the EXTREMELY explicit pictures in some of the other posts are accessible to the IT folks. (It can be done if they really think there's a problem- I won't go into the technical details.)
We've made suggestions for preventing some of the more egregious abuses, but nothing has changed. I'm going to have to give up my Moderator job if there continue to be very few restrictions on obscene posts on the site.
I would appreciate a response from Kiplinger's.

i have never clicked on the obvious porn posts until reading this post from Athena. i was totally unawares that you could post a picture inside your post.
in the thousands and thousands of posts i have read since joining the forum, i have NEVER seen anyone insert a picture to help further the poster's intent. i can image no future need of having to have a picture to further a conversation on financial issues.
it frankly SHOCKS me that someone can post a porn picture inside these forums. the links to porn sites are bad. the words used in the titles of the threads are worse. but pictures are unforgiveable.
my computer is left on. often, i have a kiplingers page open. it distresses me to no end that my kids could click a link on a page i have open and find porn.
i implore the kiplinger's staff to correct this issue. ESPECIALLY THE PICTURES!!! can't someone at the very least disable the picture function?

Yeah, 1mo, those pictures kinda make your morning coffee go down the wrong way, don't they? And no response from Kiplinger's.
Well, I do what I can (and so do the other moderators) but I'm about to head off on vacation with only my company laptop, so I won't be able to delete anything with "forbidden words" in the Subject line. I hope the others can take up the slack or Kiplinger's decides to do something.

I clicked on one by accident a couple of weeks ago and was suprised (to say the least) at the "artistic" content. I offered my services to help delete this garbage but never received a reply. Obviously, ignore them and they will go away is not the solution. Surely, a solution exists. So, that leaves me wondering what the deal is with Kiplinger's? And not for the first time.

I suspect this is not a high priority. They don't sell banner ads on this site and it probably doesn't sell subscriptions or enhance their revenue in other ways. The software is probably "turnkey", bought from a vendor with only a few options for customizing it.
Years ago I was on a bulletin board of travel enthusiasts attached to trip.com. Cendant acquired them and they pulled the plug on us one day but we all knew each other so well (including a few in-person meetings) that we were able to gather e-mails and start again on ezboard.com (now yuku.com).
It's one of the perils of being a "freeloader" on the site of a large business.

athena, that gives me a great idea. actually, they DO sell banner advertising on the site. at the top of the page on which i am typing is one for AARP!
we could all just write to each of the advertised companies and let them know they are advertising on a semi-porn site. i bet THEY would be in touch with people at Kip's that could fix it.
unfortunately, this is just the "evil" side of me speaking. i appreciate the forum very much and i could easily see them just pulling the plug wholesale instead of fixing it. i think the forums are so worthwhile, that would truly distress me ... even moreso than seeing the occasional porn.
nonetheless, i sure wish there was something that could be done. perhaps one of those squiggley passcodes for your first 10 posts to ensure the posting isnt computer generated.

Wow. That shows you how much attention I pay to banner ads. So they probably keep this Board because it gives their banner ads more exposure.
I like your "evil" idea, though. Something to think about if we ger really frustrated by lack of response!
