View Full Version : What is Distance learning course?

frenny
Hey friends,
Can anyone tell me about online education? What is it? Who does it? Why people do it? What kind of technology is used for online distance learning? Actually I want to do some courses by distance learning and I don’t have much idea. Please help me in this matter.
Thanks a lot!

I spent several years studying a rather esoteric branch of Chinese philosophy at distance. It was mostly a self-study program that had an online component for support. It was great. Purely for my own personal interest and development, although I teach martial arts and it is tangential to that. I have taught some qigong which was a part of the study.

I currently am enrolled in a certification program thru the University of California online. It could be for career advancement but I will be retiring before I complete the course of study so it is of no benefit for my current career. It could be to develop a second career but that is not my intention at this time. Again it is for my own interest and cultivation in an area of interest to me.

The main things one needs are a computer and internet access (and the funds needed to pay for the courses, they aren't cheap).

The advantages for me are the flexibility afforded for investing my time in studying and the ability to access a course of study at an institution which is located too far away for me to conveniently attend in person. I think it is pretty cool actually.

Distance education, or distance learning, is a field of education that focuses on the pedagogy and andragogy, technology, and instructional systems design that aim to deliver education to students who are not physically "on site". Rather than attending courses in person, teachers and students may communicate at times of their own choosing by exchanging printed or electronic media, or through technology that allows them to communicate in real time and through other online ways.

Distance learning is a way to take college courses by not having to go to campus. You could take a class in Chicago while living in China.

The courses are taking by a broad spectrum of students, but it is a great alternative for working adults.

As far as technology - you typically just need to have Internet access so you can participate in the online discussions and submit your work.

It is very difficult to become an accredited course provider if you are an individual or even if you form a company. Presumably you have the relevant teaching qualifications though so you could start off by setting up your website with samples of the courses, terms and conditions, privacy policy etc etc and see what happens.
