View Full Version : Saving money on textbooks

Textbooks are extremely expensive. One thing I learned over my years at college was to get a little creative in how you purchase them and it's pretty easy to save 50-80%.

Here is a great blog post featuring tips...
How to save a lot of money buying textbooks (http://spillingbuckets.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-save-bunch-of-money-buying.html)

Do you have other ideas to recommend?

As a graduate student myself, I try to save as much money as possible on textbooks. What I have been doing is buying the international versions of textbooks online. They have all of the same information as the U.S. version at a fraction of the price. The only difference that I have noticed with them is that they are usually softcover, and the graphics may be in b/w as opposed to color (but that isn't very important unless it is a book on economics where you would need to have color to distinguish the different the lines.) Also using sites like half.com and abebooks can get you great deals :)

Although i am well past the "schooling stage" of my life, i heard from that CNBC show, On the Money, that you can rent textbooks too, so you don't even have to figure out a way to keep the heavy book when you move (unless of course you want it as a reference). there are websites like chegg.com among others where you can save lots of dough. Good luck to all!

Try like amazon and ebay for used book, usually you will find it a lot cheaper than your school bookstore, but double check if it is the right serial number and edition, also prepare in advance, it might shipped late. Also sell all the book you no longer need as fast as the class finish. The longer you hold you book, the value will go down since less people will want it due to older edition and we know greedy book publisher keep trying to make new edition with just a little edit.
