View Full Version : Dental Discount Plans

Can anyone tell me how these work? I know they are not dental insurance, but what is the dentist's incentive to accept one of these plans from a patient? They seem very reasonably priced and the discounted rates for various services "fair." Is there a downside to them from the patient's perspective and if so, what?

Hello,
We recently added a discount program as a benefit of premium membership at the American Association of Employees and Self-Employed Persons. The Dental Discount Program is certainly no substitute for dental insurance but for the millions of Americans who don't have such insurance our discount plan offers valuable savings at AETNA network providers. The discount plan may also cover procedures not normally covered by insurance such as teeth whitening and cosmetic dentistry. Your best move is to look at the discount network and see if there is a trusted provider in your area and call the provider to see what the discount will be on your specific procedure. Remember that a discount plan is not insurance and that you will have to pay the provider the discounted price in full at the time of your procedure. I wish you good luck, if you are interested in AAESEP's dental discount program check out the website: www.aaesep.org and click membership for details.

If you are going to pay for one of these, make sure that you call providers in your area to ensure they know what the program is and that they will accept it. Even those offices that are listed for each card... I found that very few providers in my area would accept dental discount cards, but eventually I did and it saved me a lot of money.

How do you make sure the discount plan is legitimate?
Well, for starters, Is the company is public? Has it been in business for a long time?
If a Discount Medical Plan Organization (DMPO) license or registration is required, are they licensed or registered?
Does the company make their directory of participating doctors, dentists, etc available to you before taking your money? If not, beware!
Does the company allow you to pay with a credit card? or only an e-check? Beware if the company doesn't allow you to pay with a credit card. Purchasing with a credit card is extra protection for you if something goes wrong,
Does the company have a 30 day money back guarantee? Beware if they don't.
Does the company have a one time processing fee that is more then the regular annual fee? If so, beware!
Discounts cards aren't for everyone...but, they can save a lot of money on healthcare. If your doctor, or dentist, or pharmacy is not in the network and you aren't willing to switch...then a discount card is not for you.
If you have insurance and it covers everything you want and need, then you probably don't need a discount card.
Conversely, if you don't have insurance or your insurance is limited and you provider is in the network and you are dealing with a legitimate company...chances are you will save far more money with the card and the prices the company has negotiated they you could save by shopping around or negotiating the price yourself.

Dentists will sign up for discount plans because it brings customers to them they might not otherwise see...kind of like a coupon in the paper. If you have a coupon for one car wash and no coupon for the other car wash and the service you get is the same...would you use the coupon?
Also, the dentists don't have to file claims with the insurance company. They get paid at the time of service and don't have to wait. So although they get paid less...they get their money and they get it immediately. They don't have the expense or hassle of submitting claims to the insurance company and balance billing patients for deductibles or amounts over the maximum, etc.
