View Full Version : New question-old topic 529 or Roth IRA

beebopper
Hello,

My wife and I will both be retired and drawing on our Defined Benefit pensions when our two children (twins) start college. We will also have 403b money for retirement expenses and expect all expenses to be covered by the DB plan and 403bs.

Usually the advice is to not think of Roth IRA investments as college funds, to put extra money into a 529 if you are saving for college. But since we will be retired at the time our children start college, doesn't it make more sense to save for their college expenses through a Roth instead of a 529? Isn't it true that Roth assets are always excluded from the EFC calculation, whereas 529 funds are not?

Thank you
