View Full Version : Transferring a Custodial Account

BullRider81
I could use a bit of financial advice, I'm about to start graduate school which I will be paying for through work and student loans. However, my parents have a couple custodial investment accounts in my name that are worth approx. 60k. I do not want this money and I'm wondering if there's a good way to transfer ownership back to my parents?

Thanks.

BullRider81,

Because you are starting graduate school, I assume you are over age 18 (21 in some states), and this is a custodial account, the money is yours. You should be managing these accounts, and reporting the income on your tax return - I know you did not want to hear that.

You can give each parent $11K per year without tax or tax reporting by anyone. What your parents do with the gifts is up to them.
Or you could give it to your school or other favorite charity.
