View Full Version : Tip on lowering local long distance costs
finance teacher
If you make local long distance calls, here's a quick tip on how to lower your costs. Use a special code that puts those calls through your long distance carrier instead, which will often lower your costs.
For example, when I call Seattle, Washington, it's a local call. But if I call Bellevue, Washington, it's local long distance. The rates that Quest charges for its local long distance are higher than my regular long distance carrier, so I enter a special code that gives me my long distance carrier's lower rate on these calls.
All you have to do is contact your long distance carrier and ask them for the code to have local long distance calls charged through them, which they're more than happy to give you. You use this just like one of those phone cards. Before dialing the actual phone number, you simply dial that code, and then dial the phone number you're calling.
Give it a try and watch your phone bills drop.

?????....Or just get VOIP. (i.e. Lingo, Vonage)

Don't know if anyone's looked at this thread in a while but the information might be useful to someone eventually.
I use Onesuite for both domestic and international calling and they've saved me a bundle. They've perfected "ease of service" with everything you need to service your account via their website.
My boyfriend travels all over South America for business so the majority of my calls end up going to Chile, Argentina and once in a while Brazil and Mexico. As you might imagine, our long distance charges were on the high end. We've been using Onesuite for the last six months or so and the savings are incredible. I cannot believe how far our money goes. This is a prepaid service so you just recharge your account when it gets low. They're obviously great for domestic calling as well. We've only had to recharge our account twice! I'm completely sold.
Hope that helps.

All my calls are long-distance in the US, but I don't call very much so I don't need a monthly commitment. I use Pioneer long distance. They only charge something like 2.9 cents per minute for the places I call although I suppose it could be more in certain areas. But that's what it is to talk to my mom: a whole $1.74/hr. The catch is, you leave your credit card number on file and get billed monthly and they notify you of the charge via email. There's no paper statement but you can see the stuff online. Never hand any problems, you hardly notice they are there. So there really is no catch. I usually spend $2-$3/month, Qwest wants me to have unlimited calling for $20/month. I'll pass.

I used Onesuite primarily for calling my folks back home in the Philippines but its also good on making calls within the U.S.
Onesuite saved me a bunch since I started using it a couple of years ago vs when I still use my local phone provider. And just like everyone else, I really like the feature when you can see all the transaction online to help you manage your calls. I will only switch if someone will give me free minutes :)

Another vote for Onesuite.com.
Been a Onesuite user for so many years now and I seldom experience any problems with them. Their rates are one of the lowest (if not the lowest) and the quality of the service are very good. Calling my friends outside the U.S. especially Asia has never been easier and chepaer since I started using Onesuite.

I was a SunRocket orphan and found Onesuite being discussed at dslreports.com. I was hesitant to sign up but eventually bit the bullet and jump to Onesuite.
Their VoIP service is at par with most major VoIP players out there at a lesser cost because their payment scheme is flat rate $2.95 monthly, you'll be given a number within your area code and the monthly fee includes unlimited incoming calls. Outgoing calls is pay as you go meaning you will just pay for the actual minutes that you used.
Props to Onesuite, hopefully they will retain their good service and cheap rates.

Yup its true, Onesuite SuiteAdvantage is only $2.95 monthly. I am using it for 2 weeks now, I got my own local number and I can check my calls (even incoming calls) online...very neat I must say. So far so good :)
