View Full Version : Claim Deferred Comp on a FAFSA???

sbc1023
I (the parent) participate in a deferred compensation plan at work. Do I declare these funds as assets on my daughter's FAFSA or are they treated as IRA/retirement funds?

Deferred comp is part of "untaxed income" on the FAFSA. It is calculated and added back into the AGI and usually increases the expected family contribution.

However, if your annual contributions to the plan bring your AGI below $50000, you may qualify for the "simple test" under which all of your liquid assets are protected from the FAFSA calculations.

I see where the annual contributions are listed as untaxed income, but do I claim the balance in the account as part of my savings?

No, the account balance is irrelevent. What they are trying to determine is your annual gross income for the year prior. They are only interested in what you diverted into the account for that year.

The amount will be added to your taxable annual income for the year.
