View Full Version : Can a company match be in the form of Roth 401k, versus traditional 401k?

Bullfrog
Our company just allowed us to choose traditional 401k and/or Roth 401k. They do have a company match. I was reading other sites and someone mentioned that companies are only allowed to put the match portion into a traditional 401k and can not put it it into a Roth 401k. Is this true?

If they can, and they leave the choice to me, I assume the burning question is still: Which do I choose? What tax bracket do I expect in the future? Any additional factors to consider since this is 'company sourced' money versus 'my' money?

Thanks!

The company match is always in the form of a traditional 401(k) rather than the Roth option.

jb is correct, though who knows what's comming down the road! DC plans are always changing. However, the only time your companies plan changes is when the company updates your plan document. This is true in most cases.

Your plan document should explicitly outline what type of Roth options are allowed, if at all. Some plans don't have a Roth feature.
