The best online business?

I am looking for a way to make money online. But it seems to be populated with so many scams promising the whole heaven and earth, well, just like the offline world we are in.

What do you think are the best ways to make money online? :)

I'll bite: Here are a couple ideas:

1. Put a good discussion forum together - Advertise products and services that are complimentary to the forum. The architecture of the forum is pretty important. You don't want to confuse the reader/participant. Kiplinger is an example of a great forum, in my opinion.

2. Within your chosen expertise; offer services online that help to serve your constituents, or your community.

No matter what business you decide to go into:
-Find a mentor.
Someone who's been there before. I'm not suggesting you defer all common sense and strategy to them; but a mentor can help you address issues you would have never thought of on your own.

-Create a business plan.
This exercise will help you formulate a deliberate strategy, it will help you think thru important issues, and it will (hopefully) help you set realistic benchmarks.
-Be wary of the get-rich-quick guys. Odds are they have a business plan that involves talking you out of your money, and not much else!

-Try to do something you like.
Money will only take you so far: At some point you will begin to measure happiness based on what you do, rather than what you make - That happens some time after you stop worrying where your next meal is comming from (or what it will take to impress your friends, father etc.).
I say TRY to do something you like, because we can't all be musicians and actors.

one word theadvisorme 'advertising'. That is the way to make money on the internet, if you set up a few websites and gain them some decent page rank you will have people queing up trying to get ads and links on your site.

I say you get an Adsense and other advertisement. Safehands is right, try to give your site a decent pagerank to attract more visitors to click ads and links on you site.

Know what you really want, because doing what you want will always make you successful, Study them carefully and look for holes in the business. :D

I agree with fender5150 you need a mentor or a coach or whatever. This helps you define certain ideas and goals and of course help you to execute your plan. This is much more important I guess.

Pay Per Click is a decent enough way of making money but i think if you can establish a decent few sites or even blogs then the opportunities to sell advertising are massive. Not only that though but the majority of the time customers will come to you rather than you chasing after buisiness.

Well, online selling sounds great.. you could try selling pre-loved items on ebay or something.. but if not, you could try working virtually on elance.com or odesk.com. My friend has been working online for almost a year now as a web designer and virtual assistant and I can see that it works pretty good for her... hope this helps.

Before jumping into a new business venture, make sure you thoroughly know the business you are starting.

I'm of the opinion that, while you CAN make money from a single source (such as an online business), it's more fulfilling and enjoyable to earn money from several sources, so that you don't spend all of your time doing a single activity.
For example, you might have an online business selling sound bytes to film post-production editors, but you might also have a real estate investing business where you own a few rental properties, and you might also photograph weddings on the side.
Just a thought; it's important to mix things up, keep your life from getting stale.

Have some whine: There's so much white noise on the internet, it's hard to know who's legitimate and who's not. My board tells me my next step (for ProjectedFinancialStatements.com) is to emphasize my credentials and go after a few more endorsements. I'm going to follow their advice, but I'm doing it with a cynical grin. : )
All this stuff could be completely made up! It's not (and it won't be), but it could be!

At the end of the day, the business tools will speak for themselves. They work!
