View Full Version : education/work tax deductions

rec6937
This is my situation, I am already a college grad, the company I am working for is sending me back to school for a more specialized degree. They give me two days off a week to go to school instead of work, I am salaried, but it considered a work day. I am reimbursed for 90% of tuition and some of the fees. Here are my questions:

The mileage to the university is greater than my normal mileage to work, I am not reimbursed for mileage can i claim the difference in mileage?

Also Will I be able to claim books or any other items purchased for school usage?

Rec6937,

For qualifying work related education, you can deduct Your costs as a business expense. This would be a Miscellaneous Deduction on Schedule A, and subject to 2% of your AGI.

You would use Form 2106 or 2106-EZ for your milage and other expenses
that are not reimbursed by your employer.

Have a referral on the company. Just prepare your records and receipts of your expenses.
They would surely be considerate because your company is the one who let you have a deeper study for their benefits.

Don`t hesitate. This is just a normal prob`s.
Your lucky enough to have a thorough specialty for your job.
Good luck for your study.

The other good news is you'll also be able to take advantage of the education tax credit for the tuition you do pay, the government likes you being in school. ;)
