View Full Version : voip and dial up

are there still dial up people here? and have you ever tried skype, yahoovoice, gtalk etc? did it work for you?

I haven't used dial-up in about 4 years. (It's not worth the savings, if that's your goal in choosing dial-up over broadband. In some cases, like in rural areas, broadband is prohibitively expensive.) Doing any type of VOIP is best over broadband. Call quality is much, much better from what I hear (no pun intended).

I use to have dial up because I saved money. Then I switched to cable and its a new life and worth the money.
But when I did have dial up, I did try the dial up feature and I found it to be slow and not clear and their were delays in the hearing of the other person, choppy flow and just too slow a connection to make a smooth conversation.
Perhaps with a cable connection you might have a better chance at a clearer signal and sound quality.
Unfortunaetly, dial up is just too slow and frustrating in which you waste alot of time. DSL might be ok when avaiable, and a happy middle of the road where the cost is still cheaper than cable.

i came from dial up too, about 2 or 3 years ago i was on a very slow connection. if you really want to use the voip applications/services you mentioned, you need to invest in a really decent broadband connection. but if that wont be possible yet, you can try the free calls at voip dot com. :D you wont need your PC to call, just use your landline phone.

tell me here if you've tried it.

You definitely need a broadband connection for VoIP. For example, a regular voice landline is provisioned at 64kbits/sec (8000 samples/sec at 8 bits per sample) - quite a bit more than a dial-up connection can manage, even before you throw in the additional overhead of TCP/IP and network latency issues.

All depends on your needs, monetary situation, etc. If you're downloading things either very little or not at all and money is kinda (or very) tight, IMO dial-up is fine and cable is overkill (not to mention hideously overpriced, horrible cust service from the POSs at comcast, verizon, etc). I had dial-up as recently as 6 months ago and have "fast DSL" now and notice little diff in terms of 'net browsing. I may switch back.

not really! ive stumbled upon this website, voip.com and it lets you call for free even if you're on dial up.

hey ezekiel, i can't seem to find the free call that you're saying.. Where is it? I want to try it out

go to voip.com, click the "make a call" with beta on it, when you reach the link, fill out the numbers needed then click "make this call" its free unlimited call for real. just ignore that $0.12 balance fee. :) There.

Im on dial up. Well. I came to a point where I have to choose between two service providers. jajah and www.voip.com. I compared prices and it seems www.voip.com is the one that'll work best for me. Thanks for the link anyway. really appreciate it.

Well if your really want to have at least a decent conversation using VoIP for making calls then I think you need a DSL connection the very least with no slower than 256kbps. Dial up is only 56kbps...at least 5 times than dial up will get you a decent connection.

I am on a DSL connection but I can still access my old dial up account for free (dont ask how or why) then I tried (just a few minutes ago) using my dial up account with VoIP.com. I never, with 5 tried had a good connection. The best I got was a single hello from the other end then I never heard anything and I think my friend hang up.

I'm using Onesuite SuiteAdvantage for my VoIP calls and if I tried using a dial up, asme thing happens, very poor connection. With my 512kbps DSL line, everything works well, quality is very good with very few delays and if theres any maybe just half a sec or so.

So bottom line is, its not worth to use a dial up connection for Voip.

It should work but do not expect too much......I am able to use a softphone on my mobile with GSM connection..
Try different softphones...........

I think that broadband is available almost everywhere nowadays so I would try to get it if possible.

Yes, its just isn't worth it to try voip on dial up. You may make it worth but the quality will be horrible.

Ok folks, I am looking to become a VoIP Reseller, how can I start? I have heard a lot about how many enterprises are moving to VoIP communications. I am changing their analog phones to VoIP PC to Phones. I have also heard that anyone can sell branded VoIP products. Can anyone tell me how I can begin to market these products as a voice over IP reseller? Please answer me.

Much faster to disconnect most probably.

Again if you gonna use a usual VoIP (http://www.onesuite.com/products_Broadband_Main.asp) like Onesuite then you must have at least 512kb connection otherwise expect lots of delays, packet loss, dropped calls.

But for PC to PC calls like in Yahoo Messenger then you can get away with a dial up connection albeit no browsing or downloading at the same time.
