View Full Version : Spending less on phone bills

You can instantly access lower phone rates without switching long distance carriers and without paying in advance for calling cards. This can be done by using those "10-10" numbers. However, BEWARE of some like 10-10-220 that charge a minimum regardless of call length! That "99 cents for all calls up to 20 minutes" means just that-- even a call that lasts less than one minute (like getting an answering machine) still costs 99 cents plus taxes.

I have found rates as cheap as 4 cents a minute within the U.S.and 7 cents to Asia and Europe with the discount 10-10 and 101-xxxx numbers. This website compares a bunch of the plans and shows the catches to avoid?

Anyone know any cheap adult talklines???

Try www.onesuite.com. It is a prepaid phone service with the lowest domestic and international rates I have ever seen. Domestic is 2.5cents/min. However, you can only sign up on line. I have used them for the last couple of years and have not been disappointed at all!

The problem with using 10-10 #'s is that you are still most likely paying your long distance company a monthly fee. Most big long distance companies charge a flat fee (usually $5 / month) for the convenience of having their service...which is ridiculous.

I switched my local/long distance to a company that charges 5 cents per minute and no monthly fee. I love having this because every time the big long distance carriers call me to try and get me to switch, I have them off the phone in about 30 seconds after I tell them my rate and that I have no monthly fee. My bills are usually between $2 - $10 per month except when I do not use long distance, then they are $0 :-).

Here is the site that I used to compare long distance companies in my area

You really don't even have to have a long distance carrier. Just use the 10-10 numbers. I got rid of my long distance carrier a couple years ago.:D

I tried that as well. I'm not sure if this happens with every company, but I have heard that if you have no long distance carrier, your local carrier charges you more (typically an extra $5 per month). This happened to me when I dropped my long distance carrier.

I cancelled all of my long distance with the phone companies and purchased pre-paid calling cards from Sam's for 3.16c per minute. We now have long distance from home (with no minimal long distance fee) and we have our calling card when we travel. At&T were charging us $1 a month just to have the calling cards and then .25cents a minute. With the prepaid calling card, I know our home phone bill will be exactly $24.30 every month.

If you have a cell phone, get a contract with free long distance and use your cell phone for all your long distance.

We have a Verizon deal that provides unlimted weekend and evening long distance in about 95% of the USA. It covers all the people we call on a regular basis.

I also use the SAM's club long distance with no extra fees if using a home phone. With DSL or dial-up for most of you who have an ISP, you are forced to keep the ambilical cord landline for net access instead of severing it completely in favor of a cell phone as a home #.

For those that say, "well I have a cable modem", you are also paying a monthly basic cable acess fee that is just as much if not more than the cost of a cell contract, at least in my neck of the woods in New England where Comcast has a racket.

I'm very interested in Vonage. Please share your experience with them. How much do you really end up paying????

...$16.94 per month for 500 OUTBOUND minutes to anywhere in the US and Canada. Inbound calls, 800 #'s, etc. are free. This is their $14.99 plan with taxes and fees tacked on. I was paying upwards of $50 a month. I have been on it for a year in May. It is awesome. Calls are very clear. I occasionally (1 per month for an hour) have an outage but during that time all inbound calls get routed my cell.

I have it hooked up so that it "feeds" all the jacks in my house so as far as hook up it is transparent to the user.

Vonage is very cool. Honestly, you cannot tell the difference between it and a regular phone line. The quality over the past few years of VOIP has been dramatic.

Don't they have a deal 29.99/mo all calls anywhere US, Canada and Mexico?

The other nice thing is the Fed hasn't figured out a way to tax it yet. Se when you get the bill it's for 29.99 and not like the regulat phone, 29.99 + 4.50 State tax, +2.50 country tax, +3.80 line surchage + 7.20 Federal tax, + 2.20 phone line tightening charge (oh you didn't hear? we need to tighten the phone lines. they are getting loose and causing traffic problems.)

With our domestic prepaid calling plan (http://phonebestcard.com/calling-plan/usa-canada_calling-plan.htm) you get 700 minutes within USA Continental / Canada only for $9.95 ( flat monthly fee)

Mobivox is an orther softphone to get free calls

I would recommend a 10-10-834 service from Acceris, which charges 3 cents a minute with a 39 cents-per-call connection fee. The service also requires the user to spend at least $3 per month or incur a $2.50 low-usage fee.

Nothing cheaper than internet calling this days.

Use prepaid phone cards or VoIP (http://www.onesuite.com/products.asp)...you can never go wrong with those two. Just check if there's any additional charges aside from the advertised rates. I personally use Onesuite services for my long distance needs because of their great rates and 24/7 live customer support.
