Hi, I'm new to this website/board. So please go easy on me.
Almost a year ago I bought my first truck from a dealership. The dealership gave me the run around waiting to buy my truck, so I finally had enough and signed for the loan at 9.49% for 72 months!!!
Ouch, right. So I faithfully paid the monthly payments until July of 2002 when I received a flyer from a local credit union to lower my interest to 5.49% at 60 months. There I was sitting in the credit union lobby the next day waiting to apply. The paper work was a breeze and they said they'd call me the next day with an answer. The next day they called to deny the application because of a deliquient auto loan on my credit report. I was confused. I asked why? They said that I had 2 auto loans. One at one bank that was current on payments and another one at a different bank that no payments had been paid for awhile. I asked what the name of this bank was and it was the same bank that I have all my accounts at and the same bank that denied me a loan twice when I bought the truck last fall. So I went down to the bank and demanded to know what was going on. The lady infomed me that 2 customers had the same social security number in their system!! I shared my social security number with another person!!! I filled out the W-9 and signed paper work so it would be taken off my credit report. They even photcopied my orginal social security card and driver's license to prove my identity.
The credit union luckly let me have the better interest rate, but I had to write and sign a statement that said the deliqument loan was not mine, that it was a mix up at the other bank and it was in the process of being fixed. (I had to write this statement because the bank would not sign off on this error at that time.)
I request a copy of my credit report once a year. I received a copy of it in March of 2002 and in July of 2002 this happens. Banks...I just don't understand. Beware folks.
